Letter from the Editor

Every year, workers collapse and even die while working during extreme heat. This is not limited to Korea; countless workers around the world suffer from extreme heat. Construction workers, food delivery riders on the streets, school cafeteria workers, and agricultural workers all endure high temperatures and humidity. Appropriate work intensity and hours are basic conditions that must be met, yet they remain unfulfilled despite workers’ constant demands.

In particular, workers should not be required to work in extreme heat during the hottest parts of the day, and they must be guaranteed the right to stop work when necessary. Only then can workers remain healthy and safe even during the summer.

Although it is only May, Korea has already entered summer. Now is the time to demand our right to health in the face of extreme heat. We hope everyone can enjoy a healthy summer.

In-depth review
Not only a heat wave countermeasure, but a ‘workplace safety’ measure (Jul. 2024)

In the summer, there are frequent articles exposing the extreme temperatures in which some workers work. The articles mainly feature outdoor workers who work in the scorching sun, such as riders, delivery workers, and construction workers. They also include school cafeteria workers who each prepare meals for 100 people and by May work in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. Finally, articles sometimes include workers at logistics centers who are severely lacking in air conditioning. However, the problem will not be solved if it is consumed as an article only when it is ‘hot.’ At a press conference on the heatwave last year, a labor union activist lamented, “If you hold a press conference when it’s the hottest, by the time the news is reported and public opinion emerges, the heat will have died down a little, and when the cold wind blows, people will forget who worked and died during the heatwave.”

Job Stress Assessment of Hyundai Securities Workers  (2016)

Labor intensity in Hyundai Securities is higher than that of production workers in car factories. Workers responded that they would not feel as tired if labor intensity was reduced by 40%. About half of the respondents (47%) said they were always mentally exhausted after work.

The reasons pointed out for this strenuous labor intensity were forced sales performance and excessive campaign promotions. In particular, excessive campaigns and promotions were pointed out not only by the sales force, but also by all union members as causes of increased labor intensity. In this way, the company is passing current difficulties caused by macroeconomic problems and the stock market recession to its workers. The pressures on performance that sales workers have to endure affects investment advice and professional satisfaction. It is necessary to raise a voice about this problem and to help resolve it.
